We like… no, probably more… adore doughnuts around. A superfood for the spirit, at least in our ill-advised health book, ‘Donut Soup for the Soul’. So when I heard @whiskandbrush was building their own doughnut truck, I fell head over heels. But here is the other thing, these ladies know way more that just doughnuts - their blog is full of amazingly delightful recipes - sweet and otherwise.
So, Becca + Betsy @whiskandbrush are food bloggers by day and @dixiedoughnuts slinging babes by late night/crack-of-dawn. “We’re currently renovating a camper trailer into a doughnut truck! She’ll be making her debut this June in a number of local farmers markets and private events.
Bpt is unique in that there is an economic market here that is not overly saturated, so there is so much to be left to the imagination. However, because of that, you find yourself beginning things from scratch. This place demands its people have big hearts and endless creativity.
Our city is vibrating; quietly, unassumingly, almost mysteriously vibrating. Bridgeport has been on the cusp of a major renaissance for a while now and you feel that when you’re here. You see the potential of this city beginning to bloom. You see hard-working people put all they’ve got into reviving stores, schools, restaurants, historic buildings, parks and beaches. We’re a tough group.” Be sure to check out the new WithTheLocals.co for other features and past Locals.
Welcome to Bridgeport from @whiskandbrush! You know what makes this city a must-visit? It’s ridiculously accessibility. We’ve got your I-95 for you drivers. We’ve got your train station for you peeps coming by Metro-North Rail, Acela, or @Amtrak. We’ve even got a ferry! Yes, you can come by way of water straight across The Sound from Port Jefferson, NY to good ol’ BPT. Not to mention, folks here are stepping it up on @airbnb - like cozy abode “Maid + Butler” hosted by @mrmoonhead + @bananalady - so accommodations are #onfleek. Let’s get started!
Without a doubt, each @whiskandbrush day starts off with a good, strong cup of coffee. While the morning task may be routine for us, @sourcecoffeehouse is anything but ordinary. Husband and wife duo - Matt + Courtney- founded their beloved cafe on four core values: ethical sourcing, community engagement, sustainability, and relationships. Never underestimate the power of coffee.

What’s PHO lunch?! Pho Saigon! Nestled in the unassuming neighborhood of Little Asia, this Vietnamese restaurant is a no frills, all flavor kinda place. And SON!... It. Is. Cheap. Our @whiskandbrush suggestion?
Close your eyes and point to anything on the menu.

Perhaps the most exciting of factors to us here at @whiskandbrush is the ever growing number of local artists. Visual artists, musicians, designers, chefs, performers… this town is brimming with talent! A good place to start is in any one of the studio spaces throughout the city, like here at @nestartsfactory. It houses many of our favorites, like the owner of this bonkers gorgeous piano, singer-songwriter @ohcassius. Or the killer awesome photographer @catherine.conroy. There’s so many peeps to visit on Fridays during Open Studio Hours. And we’ve got more creative spaces to show you later this week!

Exploring can take its toll on a body. Even when @whiskandbrush has quick weekend getaways, we find it’s always important for your internal compass to know the closest spot for rejuvenation and healing. Enter into our fave wellness spot, Black Rock Pilates. Check their website for group + private classes and soon enough you’ll be refreshed and ready for more adventures galore. PS- Remember our post about @sourcecoffehouse? They’re right downstairs from here. Grab another cup!

Alright, alright, alright!!! We can’t hold out any longer. THIS. This is our @whiskandbrush number one, must-see, must-fall-in-love, must-spend-all-day spot in Bridgeport: Seaside Park.
Largely influenced + developed by Bpt’s most famous resident and circus impresario P.T. Barnum (that’s right, of Barnum + Bailey Circus!) this park is at the heart of the town. AND it was designed by the brilliant Frederick Olmsted (the brains behind Prospect + Central Park, hello?!). 325 acres houses everything from gorgeous, sandy, lounge-able beaches to sports fields, playgrounds, picnicking areas, statues, monuments, talian ice vendors, a lighthouse, running + biking paths, sand volleyball courts… phew! So much to do and see. And if you need even MORE reasons to check out this stellar heaven-on-earth, give yourself a little teaser by hopping over to @theseasides where you can experience all 365 days of the year in one entire feed. It’s all the eye candy you’ll ever need.

Mama needs a drank! One the most recent additions on our @whiskandbrush must-do list is the newly opened @cantiinbport in Downtown. Modern French-Vietnamese cuisine served up alongside some of the most deeeeeelish concoctions in town. Our first choice is (mmmm, hubba hubba!) this cinnamon smoked, rye-based Protagonist cocktail. Order it alongside any of their small plates, salads, Pho noodles… heck! Order the whole damn menu. Chef Brian is the shiznit.

There’s a place where crazy, beautiful ideas live. (All. The. Time.) It’s absolutely bananas! This place makes our lil @whiskandbrush hearts truly happy. Welcome to The Bananaland, a downtown design + development firm that specializes in awesomeness. Check out the triple threat behind the talent - @bananalady, @theheavenlyhash, + @alaurieborealis. This crew not only serves up branding + marketing professionalism, but also plays host to community events like Design Night Out (with co-host @hartfordprints) and @monarchworkshop. They’re always down for visitors! Check ‘em out.

Nom, nom, nom! @whiskandbrush Breakfast 101: Croissants by @harborview_cookies can, should, and must be eaten as often as possible. As should their cookies, voted #1 in the state! Oh, and also their BEACH sandwiches (Bacon, Egg, Avocado, Cheese, + Hot Sauce). Hungry?!

It’s so much more than your average farmers market. And it just so happens this is where @whiskandbrush found its calling for doughnuts. Nestled in the shoreline community of Bridgeport, the Black Rock Farmers Markets goes beyond the typical setup. Ever Saturday morning, June to late October, you can find vegetables, eggs, fresh cuts of meat, cheeses, and baked goods along with live music, hands-on activities for the kids, cooking demonstrations, craft tables, coffee, snacks, ice cream, food trucks, and- of course- Benny the Rooster. Don’t forget to swing by our plot to grab your @dixiedoughnuts.
Fresh and yummy! You’re in the east coast, so slurp down a few oysters along with a chilled chardonnay. When you grab your snack from @bryac1, it comes will a full helping of local music.
When the blues and oranges of the sky melt together and glisten on the calm waters of the Long Island Sound, chances are you’re strolling along the scenic walkway of St. Mary’s by the Sea.
If you’re driving through the community of Black Rock anytime from early morning to lunchtime, chances are you’ll catch a wiff of Walrus and Carpenterct’s @walruscarpenterct smoker, working hard to crank out the most incredible menu of ribs, brisket, pork shoulder, and beyond (like this yummers iceberg salad and the cheesiest mac around). Our @whiskandbrush fave is the kale salad! Walrus combines killer food with inventive cocktails and a slew of local musicians all throughout the week.

Here at @whiskandbrush we know just how tough an entrepreneurial life can be. Tough and exciting and tough and thrilling and tough again. But if ever there was a real-life-entrepreneurial-Bridgeport hero it’s the dynamic co-working community found downtown at @bhivebridgeport. Because working from home doesn’t always work.
It’s been a pleasure for us, here at @whiskandbrush, to sharing a few of the many gems in our beloved Bridgeport. Next time you’re in town, look us up!
