In our never ending efforts to experience and explore, we need to be able to see the world in many many many different lights. Though we love love love out usual jam, we need to shake things up from time to time. It’s not always what you expect, but it’s always worth a look. In fact, we want this week to remind all of us to take a step back and not always experience places from behind screens. We’re trying something new just for this week, so I hope you’ll follow along with an open mind. You’ll know it when you see it.
Our local guide, the very talented Illustrator + Stationery Designer Carly Martin @ClementineStudio. “Chicago is a quiet underdog. People who live here are obsessed with it, but it's not a flashy, complicated love… made up of lots of neighborhoods, which in my opinion is the best way to understand what Chicago is like. It's where most of the great bars and restaurants are so spend time exploring the local neighborhoods rather than staying near the Loop the whole time.”
Good morning! @clementinestudio here and I can't wait to share some of my favorite Chicago spots with you this week (some 🎨 and some 📸). I moved to Chicago about a year and a half ago from NYC and this city has quickly won me over with neighborhood charm, amazing food and coffee shops and the nicest people around. First up: coffee, because Monday.
One of my favorite parts of living in the Wicker Park/Bucktown neighborhood is the 606 trail- an old railroad that's been revamped into an elevated park running 3 miles long. There's a dog park at Walsh Park where the 606 begins, so my dog and I will hit the park early and then walk the 606 down to Park 567 which is where @Ipsento opened a second coffee shop this Summer. It's the best for people watching as everyone is starting their morning either biking or running along the 606 or stopping for coffee on their way to work. And if you're not a morning person, don't fear: they're also open late night for cocktails.
I wish this park existed when I was a kid, it's a dream! Located on the northeast side of Grant Park, Maggie Daley park is a brand new addition just opened in 2014. Besides the stunning city views with Millennium Park in the foreground, there's a skating ribbon (iced over in the winter for ice skating!), massive swing tires, a jungle gym in the shape of a ship and winding paths with surprises around every corner. Go on a weekday morning to have it to yourself and feel like a kid again! - @clementinestudio
@oliviasmarket in Bucktown is the cutest neighborhood market around. Perfect for grabbing produce, kitchen essentials, local coffees and liquors, they also have an in-house florist that keeps a fresh selection of seasonal and unique flowers. Plus there's usually a cute dog or two waiting patiently outside (like my pup Norman 👆🏻)! -@clementinestudio
@architecturalartifacts in the Ravenswood neighborhood is such a gem. I discovered it by accident last year as it's right down the street from my favorite furniture store, @nadeaufurniture. The 80,000 sq. ft. brick lofted warehouse is the beautiful home to the best antiques and curiosities I've ever come across. They even rent the space out for weddings and events! - @clementinestudio
Good morning! With a predicted long and cold Winter ahead, I'll be spending as much time as possible @gpconservatory. When you walk inside you're hit with tropical temperatures and are instantly transported to an urban oasis. Meander through rooms filled with thousands of unique plant species curated by climate, and don't miss the Palm House which features a waterfall! Did I mention it's free? - @clementinestudio
Tucked away on a quiet street, @hideoutchicago is a low-key bar (that's been around since 1934) with some of the best live music around. Pictured here is #RadioFreeHonduras. Make a night of it and go to dinner across the alley @adastchicago first 👌🏻- @clementinestudio
Not only is the brunch room at #3artsclubcafe stunning, but my favorite part is that the indoor courtyard restaurant is part of the @restorationhardware_ concept store. Meaning you can take your mimosa after brunch and wander the 3 floors of rooms testing out the couch for your future dream home. Insider tip: they don't kick you out if you hang out with your laptop all day while pretending their perfect living room setup is your own 😬👌🏻- @clementinestudio
TGIF! Treat yo'self to the best donuts Chicago has to offer (and there are no shortage of donuts in this city). There are a few @stansdonutschicago scattered around the city, but my favorite is my neighborhood location in Wicker Park- the big windows right below the L train stop makes for the best people watching 🍩☕️🍩☕️ - @clementinestudio
Rise and shine! Time for brunch 🍳. @Cindysrooftop in the historic @chicagoathletichotel has the best views of #MillenniumPark and the lake. With big skylights and comfy couches, it's the perfect place to go with a group, order a few of their share plates (French toast!) and take a selfie with the Bean without having to deal with the crowds below👌🏻- @clementinestudio
Would feel wrong to not give a shout out to the Cubbies today. I'm not even a native Cubs fan (nor much of a baseball fan), but the city's energy is palpable today as the Cubs could get to the World Series tonight if they win Game 6, for the first time since 1945. I tend to come to baseball stadiums mainly for the hotdogs, but Wrigley and the neighborhood that surrounds it is so special and reason enough to visit Chicago. #flythew -
When you visit Chicago make sure you spend as much time soaking in Lake Michigan as possible! There are so many accessible beaches and I'm always amazed how I can be in the middle of the city one minute and on a beach staring at this the next. Even in the middle of winter it's worth it to bundle up and walk along the lakefront. - @clementinestudio
Thanks for following along with me in Chicago this week! Signing off with an illustration of quintessential Chicago architecture: the colorfully ornate rounded bay windows. This cute strip on Armitage avenue is home to some of the best and has no shortage of bakeries, shops and charm. I hope you plan a visit soon 👋🏻 - @clementinestudio
