I've been a fan of June's photography for sometime now - her dreamy
So up this week, Local June Cochran @hijunecochran! "I am not to be confused with June Cochran the 1960 Playboy Bunny of the year. I'm a Destination Wedding Photographer. I wear too much black. I live in sweatpants whenever possible.
Kauai is the oldest and most beautiful of all the islands. 70% of the island is inaccessible by foot... 90% of all locals favorite island of all the chain...we're small, and people that visit are hoping for a more authentic Hawaiian experience. We pretty much have everything, incredible beaches, magnificent scenery, great food, progressive thinkers, talented creatives, both hippy and hipster vibes, and roosters....lots and lots of roosters.
If you don't see locals in the water, don't go in. Become educated on the history of Hawaii. Wear sunscreen. We drive slow here intentionally. Forget your worries on the plane and enjoy how healing this place can be." Heads up, it's going to be enchanting,
The first thing you have to do when visiting the island of Kauai is absolutely get off the ground! It’s not until then that you’ll truly grasp why we’re known to have the most gorgeous of all the islands...we literally have so many waterfall that we can’t name them all. You’ll also have to trust me on this, go the no doors route. It may sound scary, but you got this adventure bird! Life is too short to live behind windows and doors! Go with Mauna Loa Helicopter Tours...you’ll be in good hands. - @hijunecochran
Let’s exchange our wings for fins now, and get in the water! Another way to really be able to understand just how epic Kauai is, is to take a boat tour. There’s tons, but I certainly have a favorite. Go with @holoholocharters and do their Napali Snorkel Adventure. You’ll get to swim with dolphins, sea turtles, tons of fish, and boat through waterfalls and caves. It’s basically unreal and my very favorite of their tours. - @hijunecochran
When your feet are back on dry land, you’ll probably be thirsty. Hit up @KauaiJuiceCo for a refreshing pick-me-up. Their store is cute and the staff is super friendly. This is the “glow” and it’s delicious. The purple haze is also grand. If you can’t make it to Kapaa or Kilauea, you’ll can find it at most grocery stores on island. - @hijunecochran
While you’re drinking your delicious @KauaiJuiceCo head next door to one of my favorite boutiques @shipwreckedkauai. WARNING: If you enter you will want to buy entirely too many things. Don’t say I didn’t warn you. - @hijunecochran
Alrighty let’s get you back off the streets and back into nature. You might want to buy some epson salts for your feet before you go though. This incredible 300ft + waterfall is called Hanakaiai Falls and it’s nestled deep within the valley. You can reach it by hiking the Kalalau trail. It’s an 8 mile hike and expect to walk through mud, rivers, and rocks...it’s so well worth it though! Also expect to see some fellow visitors and have trouble finding a parking spot because it’s famous for a reason.
Clear over on the other side of the island (the south side) is the historic town of Hanapepe. It’s a fairly quiet and cozy street throughout the week, but every Friday night people head over to enjoy festive music, food, and art. Consider it our version of the popular mainland trend “First Friday.” During that time you’ll find this unique store @machinemachine open and filled with handmade uncommon wearables. You’ll probably also find a vintage surf film being projected on the building next to it. So grab some grub from a food truck, walk the shop, and pop a squat and enjoy the always perfect weather with plumeria breezes, and friendly faces.
The town of Hanalei (my home) has the best vibes in the state...it also the most adorable and filled with tons of character. It wouldn’t be complete without a local coffee house/fresh bakery though. This is a delightful cappuccino from @hanaleibreadco . They also make delicious treats if your stomach is growling.
It’s simple. It is a crying shame if you come here and you don’t like sushi. So now that that’s cleared up, head up the windy narrow road and next to the Wainiha General Store you’ll find this gem @sushigirlkauai . What else do I have to say? It’s walk up, take out, incredible sushi. We can all die happy now. - @hijunecochran
Our lives on Kauai revolve around the ocean...so hop in guys! Wait, but not so fast! Don’t hop in anywhere. The rule of thumb is, if you don’t see locals anywhere, don’t go in. Even the safest of spots can be dangerous depending on the weather and the tide. Depending on if you’re looking for sun, swimming, surfing or snorkeling, give Hanalei Bay or Lumaha’i on the north shore a whirl or Polihale (the longest stretch of beach in the whole state, and you’ll probably find it fairly empty) on the southwest side a try.
I’ve always been an outsider in the sense that I’ve never been a fan of shave ice (which is a big time local favorite treat), that is until I tried @thefreshshave. Holy speegolee! It’s not crazy sweet, it’s all natural and melts on the tastebuds just right!
There’s one thing I know for sure, and that is you simply cannot come here without seeing the Na Pali Coast. It’s what dinosaurs dream about it (Jurassic Park was filmed here). Do it by hiking, canoeing, boating, or flying...simply find a way. You won’t be disappointed.
If you’d rather not stick to your touristy attire, hit up @alohaexchange this awesome community minded shop for stylish beach lifestyle clothing. Also don’t forget to grab a delicious cup of joe from @darkroost while you’re there!
The very first place I recommend to all my family and friends for grub while visiting this beautiful island is @freshbitekauai. I love everything about it! First of all it’s the most delicious food on the whole island! It’s farm to beach style breakfast and lunch. Try the Buddah as a wrap, add chicken and avocado!
PS If you’re looking for other mouth watering healthy food options try any one of the following: @hippiecafekauai, @hokufoodsnaturalmarket, @papayasnaturalfood, @healthyhutkauai, @caffecoco .
Speaking of yummy! @hanaleitaro puts its best, they deliver “the new flavors of old Hawai’i.” Personally I love their taro smoothies (especially with mango).
Are you tired yet? We’ve been cruising all over the island for the last few days, so let’s avoid the big chain super cheeseballs hotels and stay at the incredible and cozy bed and breakfast @thepalmwood . I can’t put it into words that do it justice, but their IG does, so head over and give it a peek.
Ever had an acai bowl? It’s a staple in my life that tickles my tastebuds. A great place to grab one is at the super adorable truck @alohajuicebar ...you can’t it. Put honey and or peanut butter on top and also try any of their delicious juices!
Mahalo nui loa friends for following along on this little IG week trip to my home of Kauai, Hawai’i. Hope you get to make it here and indulge in all it’s goodness. Until then live aloha wherever you roam. (Mahalo @withthelocals and @campwilson) - @hijunecochran
