It’s Daylight savings time, do you know where your children are? Or Game of Thrones? Seriously, when does that come back? Whatever! We do know where WTL is this week though, because it’s like our job.
We’re with the everyones internet girl crush Meg Lewis @darngooood, 4 o’s and don’t you forget it! "I'm a designer and partner at Ghostly Ferns, a freelancer family of BFFs. I specialize in friendly, personable design for happy companies! When I'm not designing, you can find me drinking cocktails and waving to animals. I'm an extrovert but there's nothing better than spending time alone treating myself to a solo movie (with nachos!), a quick rollercoaster ride at the Mall of America, or a boozy lunch.
Minneapolis is a town run by creatives with wacky imaginations. Kindness runs through the culture here and is prevalent in the support of its inhabitants. I've never lived in a city that is so excited to support its neighbors of differing cultures, race, and beliefs. I'm crying just thinking about how loving this city is.
Minnesotans are wonderfully optimistic, kind (that word again!) and creative. They value education, the arts, and supporting their neighbors. If you try and complain about the winter here, they won't allow it.
I recently started an event space + shared workspace called Fool Proof @thisisfoolproof We're in St. Paul! My GFFs and I at Ghostly Ferns @ghostlyferns now have an online shop where we sell freaky goods and spooky oddities.”
Hey buddies! It’s me, Meg Lewis, AKA @darngooood. I’ll be your tour guide through the wonderfully chilly, charming, friendly, Minneapolis, MN! I’m a huuuuge fan of not curating my feed to only show beautiful, perfect spaces. Rather, I find beauty in uniqueness, imperfections, and vulnerability. One of the things that attracted me to Minneapolis was its sense of humor and ability to be gosh darn weird.
First up on my list of favorite things about my city is my favorite shop in town, @foragemodern_mn. Forage Modern Workshop is a shop that was basically made for ol’ Meg. They carry quirky, colorful goods for the home including furniture, wacky lamps, Scandinavian pieces, and a selection of goodness from local makers. My absolute favorite products are the noodly lamps from @erinlynnsmith. Hot dog! This place is bananas. If you have a good sense of humor when designing your spaces, I’d recommend checking out Forage Modern Workshop. Their pieces are design-friendly and super fun. Ready for some exciting news? Hold onto your butts, Forage Modern Workshop is connected to the best coffee in town @dogwoodcoffee! Bonus points also go to Forage Modern Workshop for their A+ art shows. I’m crying just thinking about how great this place is.
Don’t lose respect for me yet, friends! You would be horribly mistaken if you thought I wasn’t going to give a cheesy @mallofamerica shout out on day 1 of my With the Locals tour of Minneapolis. Heck yes, the Mall of America is a guilty pleasure of mine. I don’t particularly love shopping malls or spending hours going from store to store. I love all of the other things MoA has to offer! Some of my favorite weekdays I’ll cut away from work early and head over to the mall to ride the rollercoasters by myself, eat Dippin’ Dots, and stuff myself full of Shake Shack. I love to let go when I’m alone and give in to what the Mall wants me to do. Yes I pay to have that overpriced photo of myself on that rollercoaster printed, yes I’ll upgrade to a large ICEE, yes I’ll take your son on this ride because you’re too afraid! It’s become my new way to treat myself and I’m darn pleased that this place is so close to my house! No. Shame.
Morning! It's @darngooood here again with a hot Minneapolis recommendation. I feel so passionate about this one that I’m shaking a little bit, but that could be because my bones are made of coffee and my muscles are basically donuts at this point. @glamdolldonuts is one of, frankly, many donut shops in town. But they’re by far the most unique, imaginative, and able to poke fun at themselves. Their donuts, and brand, appeal to a crowd that doesn’t quite fit in with the traditional norms of the donut community, or entire world for that matter. Glam Doll is not only a place to be comfortable being untraditional and a little reckless; It’s also a place for me to feel comfortable enough stuffing my face with a questionable amount of sugar on a vinyl sofa. Where else can you get hot donuts with melted havarti and muenster cheese with beer glaze on top, vegan donuts, and the complete opposite: donuts with loads of bacon on top? Glam Doll has a location on Eat Street in south Minneapolis that’s pretty close to my house, but I prefer their brand spanking new location in Northeast that also serves beer and other food! They offer suggested beer pairings with specific donuts and make a savory mac & cheese donut that will melt your heart, and your face if you eat it too quickly out of the oven. The staff is the absolute sweetest. Just last week I walked in and a lovely gal reached around the counter and pulled a leaf out of my hair and told me I looked cute! Come on, marry me already Glam Doll! Serious business time: my recommendation for best donuts are The Girl Next Door (the one with the cheese + beer glaze) and the Outlaw, their cherry cheesecake donut.
Yo, babies! Meg here (AKA @darngooood). I am pretty impressed I waited a couple of days to recommend this one. Minneapolis has a ton of great companies HQ’d here but most of those are irrelevant right now because all that matters is @bludot. Here in Minneapolis, we have the masterminds behind Blu Dot doing their thing up in Northeast everyday. I think they love me so much (they don’t know who I am) that they opened an outlet store just for me (they don’t know who I am)! The @bludotoutlet, open weekends only, is my Saturday escape with my boy @thebradevans. Blu Dot Outlet offers gently used furniture, one-of-a-kind concept pieces, and discontinued items at steeply discounted prices. Like, reeeaallyy discounted, folks. Is it Saturday yet?
It’s me again, your new best friend @darngooood! My next recommendation is making me hungry for warm weather. Downtown Minneapolis is home to a gorgeous 7.5-acre park named Gold Medal Park. This perfectly manicured, bright green park spirals upwards to a shady patch of trees and benches. Too lazy to spiral back down? Kids (and me!) can be found rolling down the lush grass back to civilization. Minneapolis has a lot of parks, but this one has always been my favorite. Nestled next to the stunning blue Guthrie Theater and positioned with gorgeous views of the Mississippi river across the street, this park absolutely has to be visited! Pro tip, stop at the @izzysicecream just a block away and get a scoop before leisurely walking up the park’s spiral.
It’s time for another 💯 recommendation from your buddy, @darngooood. Another one of my favorite shops in town is @pharmacie_mpls. Pharmacie is a home goods store that carries furniture and accessories. A great curation of small gifts items for all your friends with good taste can be found here. They offer anything from candles to mens clothing items! I’m so dang pleased to have a shop like this on the south side of Minneapolis! Pro tip: grab an ice cream, boozy shake, or donut ice cream sandwich from @milkjamcreamery afterwards. You’ll thank me later!
Yoo-hoo! @darngooood here with a Minneapolis staple: @walkerartcenter. If you love contemporary art, chances are you’ve heard of Walker Art Center before. The Walker is my favorite place (possibly in the world??) to see visual, performing and media art. The Walker now has an incredible new restaurant, hello @eskergrove! It’s a great place to visit with friends or family or by yourself for an afternoon off.
Hey buddies, @darngooood here. I couldn’t go an entire week without recommending at least one brewery here in Minneapolis. We have so many incredible breweries here that it’s darn hard to recommend just one! My favorite, under-the-radar brewery is definitely @ablebrewery. Able Seedhouse + Brewery is located in a gorgeous building in Northeast. The ceilings are tall, the board games are aplenty, and you’ll definitely find a dog or two inside. The design of their space is absolutely stunning and their brand is minimal and beautiful. It’s one of my favorite places to impress out-of-towners and it’s one of my favorite places to stop in and have an afternoon beer with myself.
Who says childless adults can’t enjoy a good ol’ public pool? Hey again! @darngooood here! One of the reasons I love Minnesota most is its public park system and the facilities the state offers to the public! Last summer I discovered a public pool that not only has an above-water zipline, but it also has “cliff diving” and a lazy river! My absolute favorite thing to do in life is sit on a float in a lazy river (ideally with a cocktail). I love coming to Como Park Water Park on a weekday in the middle of the afternoon for a nice break from work. I float around the lazy river at least 20 times before I get hungry and walk 10 paces to the snack stand for a popsicle and order of nachos. Then, plop myself back on my float and take little snooze.
Happy Saturday! It’s your old friend @darngooood here again with another Minneapolis pick. I was patient in waiting a few days to recommend this one, but there’s no better time to rep @hi_lo_diner than a weekend at brunch time! Hi-Lo is an old-fashioned diner literally shipped straight from Pennsylvania to Minneapolis. They serve classic diner faire and so much more. 🍩 The Hi-Top is their signature offering: a glazed donut topped with a combination of sweet & savory. 🍗 You can get combinations like pulled pork & fried egg, korean short rib & apple-bacon slaw, or fried chicken & gravy all piled on top of a delicious oversized donut. 🍦🍹Hi-Lo also has boozy milkshakes and an absolutely incredible cocktail program. Still hungry after your 11am heart attack? 🍰Hi-Lo also has my favorite selection of pies in the city! 🌴One of my favorite things about Hi-Lo is their outdoor patio (open seasonally of course). The space converts into a lush, tropical, colorful oasis. Who doesn’t want to feel like they’re on island time while stuffing their face with syrup and egg?

Hope you're having an amazing weekend, pals! @darngooood here with my second to last recommendation for the wonderful city of Minneapolis! This one's a real winner. Believe it or not, Minneapolis is a city of amazing coffee. When I lived in Brooklyn, I would pine for Minnesota's unique coffee shops and large, open spaces with plenty of outlets. @urbanbeancoffee (esp. the lake st location) is absolutely my favorite place to get work done in the city. The space is big and bright with outlets galore! The sun pours into the space and really gets my design brain chugging away. I love that they serve @fourbarrelcoffee, which isn't exactly from Minnesota but heck it's delicious! This space is a must-see if you're looking to be productive or meeting a friend for a coffee. Oh hey, and look, it's a @kateworum illustration on the wall!
🙃Our time together has come to an end. @darngooood here with my last (and favorite!) Minneapolis recommendation. @holaarepa is hands-down my favorite restaurant in Minnesota (and quite possibly ever??). I come here at least once a week. They serve up delicious arepas (cornmeal cake sandwiches) from pulled pork or chipotle chicken to vegetarian arepa options with black bean & queso fresco. My favorite is Hola Arepa’s weekend brunch which serves up a breakfast arepa made with fried egg, black beans, cotija cheese and aioli verde. 🥑Definitely pay extra to add the guac! 🍹 If you didn’t think Hola Arepa could get any more delicious, try their cocktails. They have my favorite cocktails in the city and aren’t afraid to try some weird combinations. 🍍The Cafe a la Playa (pictured) is a mix of cold brew with tequila, mezcal and pineapple juice. Sounds weird? Yes. Tastes delicious? Yes! Their margaritas are fresh and their tap cocktails are also incredible. 🌴In the warmer months, opt to sit outside on the patio. It has lush tropical vibes and will make you feel like you’re on vacation! But most importantly, if you find yourself in Minneapolis please DM me and we’ll go out for an arepa and a cocktail!
