Rochester New York
"Rochester locals are very sensitive about Wegmans and very pushy about the Garbage Plate. Just roll with it."
1. Wegmans is a slice of heaven. If you think otherwise, we can't be friends.
2. According to the great and all-knowing internet... "A Garbage Plate is a combination of two selections of cheeseburger, hamburger, red hots, white hots, Italian sausage, chicken tender, fish, fried ham, grilled cheese, or eggs; and two sides of either home fries, French fries, baked beans, or macaroni salad. On top of that are the options of mustard and onions, and a sauce with spices and slowly simmered ground beef... Health.com named the Garbage Plate the fattiest food in the state of New York." Others call it a true Rochester delicacy.
This week, we're with the ladies of the seriously beautifully curated blog and instagram The Merrythought @themerrythought, Caitlin @caitlinsheree + Manda @mandamooie. Given their charming taste and dreamy photos, the #Rochester tour is sure to be lovely. Like, Wegmans level lovely.
Happy Monday! We're so excited to be here for the week sharing our favorite spots in Rochester! We thought it would be best to start the week off with our favorite donuts from Ridge Donut Cafe. They have so many options and they are all incredible. Believe us, we've done our research. 😉

@abode_roc is one of our favorite shops in #rochester. They have a perfectly curated selection of home goods and gifts from local makers as well as an always changing stock of mid-century furniture and home decor. A store that combines vintage and handmade is always pretty grand in our book!

It's always an incredible place to go for a walk or to have a picnic, but Highland Park is simply magical in the spring. We've been spending as much time as possible there lately. If you're in the area, the (117th!) annual Lilac Festival is going on until the 17th!

I've never had anything from @villagebakeryandcafe that I didn't love. Ask any of my friends, I'm a little over the top about this place. Their sandwiches are beyond tasty and their space is beautiful. If you get there too late for lunch, hop next door to @trata_roc and try the brussels sprouts salad!
We have three waterfalls through Rochester along the Genesee River. Every travel guide will suggest that you visit High Falls (you definitely should) but, if you're up for a hike through the woods, you can get down to the base of Lower Falls and explore a huge cave for a beautiful, less traveled view.
Oh, the garbage plate. Nick Tahou's has been serving these up since 1918 and we Rochestarian's are painfully proud of them. Almost every restaurant in the area that serves burgers now has some variation of this plate. They may appear a bit unappetizing and we can't say they're healthy, but we love them and you better believe we will convince you to try one! 😉

A section of the abandoned subway that once ran through Rochester is still accessible. It's walls are filled with art and graffiti and it's a great place to stroll through and explore. You can find an entrance along South Ave. behind Dinosaur Bar-B-Que.
Hart's @hartslocalgrocers is a local grocery store that just opened up in downtown Rochester this past year. It's a beautifully styled store full of local products, delicious prepared foods, and a staff that is incredible - shopping here is a treat! It's quite possible that we pick up macarons every time we stop by. And don't get us started on the pork carnitas sandwich from their sandwich shop!

On hot summer days, you can take a quick drive out of the city and reach the shore of Lake Ontario. Try Durand Eastman Park for hiking or Ontario Beach Park for a stroll down the pier. Of course you can always just pack a lunch and do some sunbathing!

We'll never turn down delicious Mexican food, it's pretty much a constant craving for us! And @johns_tex_mex hits the spot every time! They have huge burritos for great prices and we always order salsa and chips. This is a perfect spot to stop for lunch or a quick dinner, especially when the weather's warm and you can eat outside!

@pourcoffeeparlor is one of our favorite places to catch up with friends or have meetings. Fresh style, great coffee, and tasty food... they've got it all covered. And for the non-coffee drinkers, we'd recommend their hot chocolate all day.

This gem of a place is how we survive 6 months of snow. For just $3 (or a $10 year pass) you can come sit in the tropics or the desert for a few hours with your favorite book. You'll even get to see turtles and quail that call this sweet oasis their home. Even during the summer this place is sure to warm your spirit!
Thanks for letting us show you a little bit of our city. Be sure to come visit and message us if you need more suggestions!
